Four County Electric Care Trust gives grant to Smart Start of Pender County
Thanks to a $2,000.00 grant from the Four County Electric Care Trust, Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) of Pender County and Smart Start of Pender County (SSPC), will provide the families and child care educators of children ages 9-12 free access to books, as well as other materials and services that stimulate learning and enhance literacy. “We are grateful to the Four County Electric Care Trust Board for supporting our efforts to maintain a community resource that focuses on helping children develop strong reading and literacy skills. We hope that our efforts encourage young children to develop a love of reading, as well as increase the likelihood that these children will develop skills that will help them be successful in school, career, and life,” states Connie Carr-Costin, Executive Director of SSPC. Smart Start provides funding for literacy materials and programs for children birth to 5; however, SSPC must depend on local, state, and national grants, as well as donations for funding to support school age programs and materials.
Smart Start of Pender County helps child care teachers and parents access resources and materials that are essential to meeting the challenges of early learning and education and encourages the community to invest and support the growth and development of safe, happy and healthy children by focusing on the importance of quality early care and education.
SSPC hosts a book distribution event quarterly for children ages birth to 12; in addition, resource library members may pick up books for their children monthly, or non-members may bring their children by the agency to pick up books once per month.
